18 Year old Fatima who walks 2km to school every day now owns a bicycle Respite seems to have come for Fatima, the primary 2 pupil, who treks 2 kilometers to school every day from her village in Tsafe in Zamfara state. A campaign called the Give North Education Achievement, according to a facebook post by Bulama Muhammad Bukar, donated a bicycle to the girl in a move to encourage her schooling. Bukar, who seems to be a part of the movement said, that the cause is determined to make education accessible to everyone in Northern Nigeria.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that some secondary schools in Adamawa have rejected Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s new free education policy. The policy which will commence from September 2019 according to Fintiri, is aimed at improving performance from students whose parents are financially challenged. The governor had said: “As from September, parents would no longer pay school fees. Our plan is to make sure that government schools can compete with private schools in quality of education in the state. We are also going to recover all school lands encroached on by some people. “However, some schools in the state are kicking against the policy, arguing that it denies them control of their finances and affects their revenues. Concerning this, an unnamed teacher told journalists that principals are worried that the policy will not only affect their finances, but will also call into question what they do with them.
The teacher said: “The school where I teach collects about N2 million every term from fees while new students are made to bring chalk, hoes, brooms at the beginning of every session. So, the school does not buy all these items and some students sit on the floor because there are no chairs. Then what is the principal doing with the fees?”
